The airport is located in Purbalingga regency, nearly 200 kilometers to the south west of Semarang City, or 160 kilometers in the north west of Yogyakarta.
General Soedirman Airport takes its name from Soedirman (1916-1950), Purbalingga-born nationally-recognized military hero.
The airport was once Wirasaba military airbase, becomes the third one serving Central Java, beside the province's existing General Ahmad Yani Airport in Semarang, and Adi Sumarmo Airport in Boyolali.
Established by PT Angkasa Pura II, the airport has completed its passenger aircraft flight tests on January and April 1st, 2021.
The flight tests verified various systems in the airport, including flight procedures, minimum performance criteria, communication facilities navigation, meteorology, runway, and the airfield lighting system.
Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi explained, as official website of Cabinet Secretariat wrote, General Soedirman Airport apron covers an area of 6,432 square meters, with a 1,600-meter-long and 30 meter-wide paved runway.
The airport also provides a taxiway measures 165 x 18 meters; and a 3,600 square meters terminal to handle up to 300 thousands passengers.
Authority plans to expand the runway to 2,500 meters long and 45 meters wide, to accommodate larger planes such as the Boeing 737.[sahrudin]
